Teaching plans for 2016-17

Despite my best efforts the new year is upon us! I’m going to be completely honest and say that this is the first year that I haven’t been genuinely excited about getting back into work. By the time August comes around every year I miss my students, I can’t wait to see them again and hear all their stories and have a laugh with them but this year, I could probably wait another week or two! I’ve just had the best Summer and I’ve totally taken my eye off the ball.

As a result here I am on a Monday morning, first day of term and while I have my schedule and calendar done for the year I feel totally unprepared! It’s time to get down to brass tacks and get a plan in action. Luckily planning is one of my favourite activities so I think I’m in for a good morning. I’ve my diary out in front of me and the kettle is on!

Firstly, I would like more performance opportunities for my students. This will help them become more comfortable playing in front of people and will also get them into the habit of working at a piece until it’s performable instead of just finishing learning the notes and moving on.

Next I’d like to get involved in the community more. Our local bookshop has already reached out to coordinate a few events this year so that’s great. I’ll have to put my thinking cap on for more opportunities. I’m thinking maybe a Christmas event would be nice as I love love love Christmas.

I’ve changed my schedule this year to include more group classes while still keeping the same amount of individual classes. I hope this works. The kids get great enjoyment out of their group classes and it keeps them motivated throughout the year, especially during the winter when the weather gets a bit dreary it’s good to inject a bit of excitement into the term!

A big one for me this year is that I would love to host a workshop day here in Moycullen. Usually they involve a lot of planning and organisation so we’ll see how that goes. I’m thinking it would be lovely to have an well rounded music workshop with both instrumental and non-instrumental classes for all ages. I had hoped to do this last year but the weeks just ran away from me.

Lastly, and my biggest concern this year, is that I’m getting married in April so I’m going to have to try REEEEEALLY hard not to get distracted by that! Hopefully writing the blog and setting aims will keep me motivated and focused… hopefully…

So I hope everyone has a lovely first week back and nobody is too traumatised by their morning alarms!
